Firearms incident in Wainuiomata

1 min read

A man has been flown to Wellington Hospital with pelvic injuries after a shooting incident in Wainuiomata about 4pm this afternoon.

Details are still sketchy but Inspector Pete Cowan, acting Lower Hutt Area Commander, says police are currently speaking with a second man in relation to the shooting.

Inspector Cowan says police received multiple 111 calls from members of the public concerned about the activities of a man outside an August Avenue house. The calls included reports of shots being heard.

"Police, including the Armed Offenders Squad, responded and found a person with firearms injuries at the scene. Paramedics were called and the person has since been airlifted to hospital," Inspector Cowan says.

The extent of the man?€?s injuries is not yet known but he is understood to be in a stable condition.

Inspector Cowan says a man believed to be involved in the shooting is now in police custody and officers are speaking with about 20 witnesses from the community.

"It?€?s too early to comment on what prompted the shooting but we believe it to be domestic related," Inspector Cowan says.
