A potential recruit has helped save the life of man in distress, who was contemplating harming himself in the water off the North Shore.
Police were called to the beach area between Milford and Takapuna after midnight on Saturday 17 March.
A man had swam more than 200 metres into the tide.
Within minutes a Police unit arrived but the staff couldn’t spot the man from land.
In the car was Nick Prendergast, .?
He was equipped with a key skill which was needed that night – Nick is a competitive swimmer.
He swam out, found the man and waited for Constable Joshua Cadwallader to join him in the water and bring the man safely ashore.
The man was taken to hospital with hypothermia.
Inspector Alisse Robertson, Acting Area Commander North Shore, said Nick and Joshua did a great job.
“They displayed great courage venturing into the water in darkness to save the distressed man.
Police wish Nick well with his continuing application and hope that one day he will be able to count this rescue as a better work story.”
