Police can now release the name of the man who died in a car crash on Tuesday in Dome Valley, north of Auckland.

He was James Eoin Gillespie aged 86 years old, from the North Shore.

The passenger in the car remains in Auckland Hospital in a stable condition.

The Police's Serious Crash Unit is investigating the accident, which involved three vehicles.
