Police appeal for info regarding taxi driver assault

Police are continuting to investigate an assault on a taxi driver in Alicetown, Lower Hutt on Sunday 24 December.

Around 8:45pm that night, a man approached a taxi and punched the driver a number of times, before causing damage to the vehicle.

Detective Sergeant Lee Underhill says this was a serious and unprovoked assault that could have seen the victim very seriously injured if not for the intervention of a passerby.?

"He undoubtedly saved the victim from serious head injuries," says Detective Sergeant Underhill.

"The victim is recovering with support, but is shaken and has not been able to return to work since the incident."

"No one should be subjected to a nasty and unwarranted attack while simply working to support themselves and their family."

"I’m confident that an arrest will be made as the investigation progresses. We have been following strong lines of enquiry, but we also need your help."

"There were people present on the night who recorded the incident – I’m interested in any footage that people have depicting the assault or the offender."
