Roundabout antics land 18-year old driver in court

1 min read

To be attributed to Inspector Mike Wright, Wellington District Road Policing Manager

?

Last Thursday, a member of the public contacted Wellington District Police with footage of an impatient driver travelling up the wrong side of the road and then the wrong way round a roundabout at a busy Lower Hutt intersection.

?

Traffic was backed up due to an earlier vehicle incident.

?

The concerned driver had captured the incident, and the identifying details of the offending vehicle, on his dashboard camera.?

?

Following further enquiries, Police have this morning served a summons to appear on the father of the 18 year-old alleged offender.? He is due to appear in Lower Hutt District Court on 9 April charged with dangerous driving.

?

The driver’s actions in peak hour traffic put not only himself, but other road users and pedestrians at risk. ?His impatience has now landed him a day in court.

?

I want to applaud and thank the member of the public who provided us with this footage and reported the incident.? We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe and it is pleasing when members of the public and Police can come together to hold dangerous drivers to account.

?

While it was extremely fortuitous in this case that the informant had dashcam footage, members of the public can also report dangerous driving to 111 or *555 in non-emergency events.
