Symonds Street remains closed this morning between Karangahape Road and Newton Road, following a fatal crash earlier this morning.

Police are speaking to witnesses of the crash, as well as the two people who fled the scene immediately following the crash.

The Serious Crash Unit is completing a scene examination and will be at the crash site for some time yet this morning.

Police request that motorists travelling into the central city via Symonds Street take alternative routes, and we thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

No details regarding the person killed will be provided until formal identification and next of kin notifications have taken place.
