Three arrests, stolen property recovered from Nelson burglaries

A 45-year-old man has been arrested and faces charges relating to a series of burglaries and thefts from vehicles in the Richmond and Stoke areas in recent months.

A number of search warrants were executed in the Nelson area over the last couple of weeks, where Police recovered numerous items of stolen property, as well as two firearms and both class A and class C drugs.

Fatal crash: SH1, Kaikōura

A person has died after being hit by a truck at Peketā this morning.

Emergency services were called to the crash, between Inland Kaikōura Road and Rakanui Road, about 9.20am.

The person was a pedestrian and died at the scene.

Police are providing support to their next of kin.

The Serious Crash Unit has conducted a scene examination and State Highway 1 reopened about 2.40pm.

Police would like to thank the emergency response teams who assisted at the scene, and motorists for their understanding and patience.

Police acknowledge sentencing for Blenheim homicide

Police acknowledge the sentence handed down to Paul Thomas Armon today in the Blenheim High Court.

Mr Armon was sentenced to life imprisonment with 15 years non-parole for the murder of his mother, Jennifer Sheehan, late last year.

We extend our sympathies to Mrs Sheehan’s family.

They have asked for privacy at this difficult time.

Tasman Targets Anti-Social Road Users

From Wednesday 28 May to Sunday 1 June 2025, Tasman Police delivered an operation focused on anti-social road users.

This was in response to an increase in complaints from the local community.

Two search warrants were executed, resulting in a stolen firearm being located and three vehicle impounds for sustained loss of traction and driver licence offences.

Update: Harihari Highway (SH 6) crash

A motorcyclist has died following a crash on Harihari Highway (State Highway 6) this evening.

The crash, at Kakapotahi near the Waitaha River Bridge, was reported to Police at 5.15pm.

No other vehicles were involved.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time and motorists are asked to take alternative routes where possible, or consider delaying travel.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way.

Police recover 365 pieces of pounamu, West Coast

The pieces and boulders of pounamu that had been stolen from the Jackson River were recovered following a report by a member of the public.

West Coast Police have executed 10 search warrants across the Westport and Greymouth area this week, in relation to organised crime in the wider region.

West Coast staff worked alongside colleagues from the Te Waipounamu Gang Distribution Unit (GDU) and the Tasman District Organised Crime Unit (TDOCU).

While undertaking the warrants Police located :
- More than a kilo of cannabis
- A vehicle sought in relation to a hit and run crash
- A pistol and ammunition
- An illegal bar operating.

Police appealing for information following arrest after Nelson house fire

A 47-year-old man is before the courts following a house fire in Nelson, and are appealing for information from the public.

At around 9.50pm, on Wednesday 21 May, Police were called to Konini Street after a report of a house fire.

One person received serious injuries and were transported to hospital.

Police are now appealing for the public's help to identify two witnesses who were travelling in a vehicle on the night of the incident.

Police appealing for information after house fire, Cobden

Police investigating a house fire in Cobden are appealing for information from the public.

At around 12.10am on Wednesday 14 May, Police were notified of a house fire on Bright Street.

A scene guard was put in place overnight and Police conducted a scene examination with a Fire and Emergency New Zealand fire investigator today.

The house fire is being treated as suspicious at this stage.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the surrounding Bright Street area from 11pm Tuesday to 12am Wednesday.
