They explore strategies for handling this pressure. They are given the opportunity to share these strategies. Learning experience 1: Making safe choices Learning intentions By the end of this learning experience students will be able to: identify pressure to become involved in drink-drive situations explain the importance of making safe choices. Activities 1. Decisions Divide the class in half. Then put each half into groups. Explain to the class that you are going to read them a situation, involving Kelly and Brad. Situation It is after exams. The party to celebrate is at Rachels place. Her parents are away, but said it was OK to have the party, so long as everyone was sensible. There are lots of people there, and most of them have been drinking pretty steadily all evening. There has been a lot of food available, though. Kelly came with Brad in his fathers car. They havent been going round together for very long. At about 2am Kelly wants to go home. Brad agrees. Brad has had quite a few cans spaced over the evening, and he did eat just about a whole pizza himself! Ask the groups in one half of the class to discuss the situation and answer the question: Do you think Brad should drive? Ask the rest of the groups to discuss the situation and answer the question: Do you think Kelly should go with Brad? Take some opinions, and reasons for these opinions, from some groups from each side. Give the class some, or all, of the new bits of information below in turn. After each, the groups make a decision about what they think their character should do, and share this with the rest of the class. New information Kelly notices that Brad is slurring his words a bit. She asks him if he is OK. He says it is the medication he is on. It makes him a bit dozy. He says he is fine to drive. Five guys from the party who live out Kellys way, ask for a ride home. A couple of them are very drunk and noisy. One of them offers Brad a can. It looks like Kelly might end up sitting on someones knee in the front seat. Kelly lives quite a way out of town. There are no buses going that way and she hasnt got money for a taxi. She has started to feel really sick and is tired of all this hanging around. Brad feels really responsible about getting her home. Brads parents have got strong views on the drink-drive issue. Brad knows he wouldnt get to use the car again if he got caught over the limit. Hes pretty sure hes OK, though. Anyway, he knows where there might be a checkpoint and can go round the long way. Kelly is getting pretty fed up with all these other guys hassling her and Brad. One of them just threw up right by the car door. Shed drive herself but she is on her restricted. Share the conclusion with the class. Conclusion Kelly was really undecided about what to do. Then she took another look at Brad, turned, and went inside to ring her Mum. Twenty minutes later Kellys mum arrived to take her and Brad home. She wasnt pleased about being woken up, but decided not to say anything until the morning. By then shed had time to think about it and was just relieved that Kelly was safe at home. What about Dave and the other guys? Well they ended up crashing on the sitting room floor. When they woke up late next morning, Rachel got them busy on the cleaning up! Ask: What do you think of the decisions that Kelly, Brad and the others made? Have you ever been in a similar situation? What sort of a decision did you make? What might you do in the future? Learning experience 2: Safety strategies Learning intention By the end of this learning experience students will be able to identify and use strategies to overcome peer pressure to be involved in drink-drive situations. Activities 1. Scenarios Put students into groups and give each a large sheet of paper and felt pens. Ask the group to decide on a time when they, or someone they know, have found it hard to make a sensible and safe decision about drinking and driving. For example if someone in your family is telling you to do it, or there appears to be no other way of getting home. The group writes or draws a short scenario about this situation. Each group passes their sheet of paper to the next group on their left, who come up with a number of strategies for handling this situation in a sensible and safe way, which they also write on the sheet. Place completed sheets around the wall and discuss the strategies. Ask: Do you think you could use these strategies? Why or why not? How can you support each other in these difficult situations? 2. Role play Each group uses one of the scenarios and prepares a role play that includes the person applying pressure, the person being pressured and an observer. The observer give the person being pressured feedback on new, different or better strategies to resist pressure to drink and drive. Ask: Which strategy was the easiest to use? Which strategy was the most effective to use?
