This has coincided with more graffiti at the school.Identification and prioritisationAn increase in the recovery of stolen cars led Police to identify the school as a 'hot spot'. Property taken from cars was also found in the nearby forest and fresh graffiti appeared on school property.Short-term goalTo increase community awareness about car offences and graffiti. Long-term goalThe school will no longer be used as a dumping ground for stolen vehicles. The school will remain graffiti free.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Security lighting was improved. Security patrols and signage were established at the school. Visibility was increased in the car park by opening up the surrounding forest area. This made it harder for people to hide when discarding stolen property. All graffiti were removed. Community connections Identification of the area as a hot spot resulted in increased police patrols. Better liaison was developed between the school and Police groups such as School Community Services, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Intel. Auckland Chinese Catholic Society and family members of students helped to cut back the forest area and remove graffiti. Curriculum teaching and learning Students used inquiry-based learning based on Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/tag-free" Tag Free resources to decide between good art and graffiti. Student lessons reinforced Catholic values that it is wrong to steal from others. This was aligned with lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/doing-right-thing" Doing the Right Thing.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, graffiti has been removed and communication between the school, Police and other community stakeholders has improved. Next stepsThe next step is to regularly check the car park and school for any more stolen cars or graffiti. ObstaclesIt was difficult at first to coordinate the different stakeholders.ImprovementsThis intervention would have been more effective with greater student input into suggestions for changes.ConclusionThe school is proud that everyone took part in the intervention, as the problem affected not just the school but the community as a whole.
