Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified and prioritised by Auckland Transport, teachers, parents and Police. Short-term goalTo decrease the parking of private vehicles outside the school. To increase the safety of students who cross the road at the lights. Long-term goalNo student or adult will ever be injured outside the school gates.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Senior school staff wearing high-visibility vests were rostered at the school gates. School patrols in high-visibility gear monitored the area. Auckland Transport erected sturdy barrier fences. Another set of traffic lights was installed to help students cross the road. 40 km speed zones were established. Community connections School staff, Police and Auckland Transport met and considered ways to improve traffic flow. Police patrols were increased to detect drivers running a red light. Auckland Transport increased parking enforcement. School newsletters informed parents that students were to be picked up and dropped off at the rear of the school and encouraged them to use walking school buses. Curriculum teaching and learning All junior school students received lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" road safety resources from health teachers and the SCO. School traffic wardens received additional training that emphasised anticipating when drivers were likely to run a red light.ImpactThe intervention had little impact, with minimal improvement in driving attitudes. Even when Police are in plain view motorists still offended. Next stepsA tunnel under the road will be completed in 2017. It is hoped this will reduce traffic issues outside the school. Placards will be used to remind motorists of the need to consider student safety.ObstaclesThe road works added to the traffic congestion and the cost of implementing sustainable solutions is high. Time constraints prevented the intervention from being completed as successfully as intended. Motorists have limited knowledge of the rules governing intersections.ImprovementsThis intervention would have been more effective with greater student input into the suggestion of changes.ConclusionThe school is pleased that no one has been injured while travelling to or from school.
