The presence of a large institution across the road increased congestion and parking in the area. Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified and prioritised by teachers, parents and the community, who complained about non-compliance with the parking signs at both entrances to the school. The intervention was developed by the principal, Auckland Transport, Police and members of the community. Short-term goalTo decrease the numbers of private vehicles parking outside the school. To increase the safety of students entering and exiting the school. Long-term goalTo change how parents pick up and drop off students, and reduce the number of offences committed by vehicles parking at the school gate.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment School staff, Police and Auckland Transport looked at ways to improve traffic flow and change the '5 minute parking' zone to 'drop off' zones. Designated drop-off areas were established for year levels and pick up times were staggered. The use of walking school buses was promoted. School staff wore high-visibility vests when monitoring drop off zones. School staff actively monitored drop off zones. Community connections Police patrolling and enforcement, especially by the Road Policing Team, was increased. Auckland Transport increased parking education (through warnings) and enforcement. Parents were informed by several newsletters of the new drop off zones. Curriculum teaching and learning All junior school students received lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources delivered by health teachers and the School Community Officer. The school TV network featured traffic education.ImpactThere was a marked improvement in traffic safety and congestion outside the school was significantly reduced. Next stepsThe next steps toward the long-term goal include regular monitoring by teachers, Police and the council, and education for the parents of new students. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the time it took to go through the approval process with the council and to educate parents. ImprovementsThis intervention would have been more effective with: collaboration with the major institution across the road as part of the interventions community connections prevention activities earlier and faster implementation with the council, as it takes time to go through the approval process more time for educating parents.ConclusionThe school is proud of the marked increase in safety for students, the decrease in congestion, and the changes in parental attitudes that have been achieved.
