Short-term goalTo decrease the use of private vehicles to transport students. To stop parents from using the staff car park.Long-term goalTo increase the safety of students crossing the road outside the school.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school, SCO and the local council met and looked at ways to improve traffic flow. Teachers were encouraged to use buses and bicycles. School staff (patrol supervisor and bus wardens) in high visibility vests were rostered to supervise the road. An extra school patroller was appointed to prevent parents coming into the staff car park. Community connections Email and newsletters were used to inform parents of the new parking limitations and to encourage their children to use buses and bicycles to get to and from school. Police patrols were increased during peak hours. Council parking enforcement was increased during peak hours. Parking zones outside school were changed to ensure better traffic flow. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources encouraging them to take responsibility for pedestrian behaviour. Members of school patrols were given extra training to make them aware of driver blind spots. ImpactTraffic congestion has decreased and parental parking somewhat improved. Next stepsThe next steps toward the long-term goal include regular monitoring and education by teachers, Police and parking wardens to reinforce and entrench the new patterns. ObstaclesParents were reluctant to recognise the problem. Many warnings and infringement notices had to be issued. It took too long to get designated parking areas moved. There was not enough time to implement the intervention well.ImprovementsThe intervention would have been more effective if: a survey of concerns and issues had been made beforehand, which might have brought more parents on board the students had been involved through inquiry-based learning, so that they could investigate the issues and design solutions to them there was a more realistic timeline for the engineering work.ConclusionThe school is proud that all of its persistence is starting to pay off and that congestion outside the school gate has declined.
