This put students' safety at risk. This traffic congestion was also blocking vehicular access to and from the school for teachers and emergency vehicles. Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified by the principal and teachers at the school, and the SCO. Short-term goalTo reduce traffic congestion in the street leading to the school. To improve the safety of student pedestrians in the vicinity. Long-term goalTo eliminate double parking and traffic congestion in the street leading to the school. To improve parents awareness of traffic safety and responsible practices when picking up their children from school. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The traffic environment around the school was identified as unsafe. Community connections Police patrols and Auckland Transports mobile parking officers regularly enforced parking regulations, reduced parking congestion and encouraged better driver behaviour near the school. The principal liaised with Auckland Transport and the school joined the  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise programme, which promotes safe and sustainable transport practices. Parents were informed by a letter highlighting the pedestrian safety issues in the street and seeking more support from the school community to solve them (e.g., by suggesting they park and walk). The SCO spoke to offending or inconsiderate drivers to educate them on pedestrian safety and encourage safer practices when picking up their children in future. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior school students received lessons from Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources. Travelwise coordinators will deliver education in the classroom during 2015.ImpactThere was a noticeable reduction in the number of vehicles double parking in the street in question, with fewer traffic jams.Next stepsThe next step is for the school to utilise its relationship with Travelwise and Auckland Transport to maintain parking enforcement in the area, and to reduce parking congestion by having existing parking restrictions changed to become drop off and pick up zones.ObstaclesThe high level of improvement could not be maintained without a regular Police or Auckland Transport parking presence, but these visits cannot be maintained indefinitely.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: having adequate official drop off and pick up zones installed in the street leading to the school setting up a walking school bus.ConclusionThe school is pleased to have the support of Travelwise in exploring options to help keep students safer when walking to and from school.
