Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified by the principal and staff of the school and by the SCO. It was prioritised as an issue because a number of incidents had been reported to the school by concerned parents who walk their children to school. The school also identified road safety in general as a vitally important part of providing a safe environment for their students. Short-term goalTo reduce parking congestion near the school. To reduce the number of vehicles turning into a car park. This blocks both the pedestrian crossing (operated by a school patrol) and the footpath.Long-term goalTo keep the nearby car park closed off before and after school. To prevent parking congestion near the school despite the nearby car park no longer being available for parents. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school set up walking school buses. The school is requesting the council to replace the existing parking restrictions with official drop off and pick up only zones. Community connections The manager of the nearby car park collaborated with the intervention by keeping the entrance closed before and after school. The SCO patrolled the area regularly and spoke with many parents who were parking inconsiderately. Police and Auckland Transports mobile parking patrols increased their monitoring and enforcement in the area. Parents were informed by a letter from the school requesting they park and walk and not double-park. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior school students received lessons from Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources. The school worked with the  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise programme coordinator to implement student participation through curriculum studies. ImpactAs a result of an intensive campaign lasting several weeks, traffic congestion and parking habits improved dramatically near the school. More parents are now parking further from the school in public car parks and walking their children to school from those areas. More students are using the walking school buses. Next stepsThe next step is to install drop off and pick up only zones near the school, supported by periodic enforcement visits by Auckland Transport parking wardens. ObstaclesClosing off the nearby car park solved the pedestrian safety issues, but meant that even less parking close to the school was available for parents. The intense Police presence needed initially to reduce parking congestion could not be maintained indefinitely. However, increased visits from Auckland Transport parking wardens helped to manage the situation, as did the measures taken by the school to inform, educate and encourage parents to park further from the school and walk with their children rather than drive them to the gate. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by creating more efficient parking options such as drop off zones.ConclusionThe school is proud of establishing an awareness of road safety in the students.
