Discussion between the SCO and school management identified a recent number of very serious cyberbullying incidents and other problems associated with the misuse of social networking sites. Short-term goalTo decrease the number of serious incidents of harm resulting from cyberbullying. Long-term goalTo create and maintain a culture of ethical responsibility among students regarding use of social networking sites, and zero tolerance of cyberbullying.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school management developed a policy regarding the possession and use of mobile phones by students while at school They have acted swiftly and responsibly in dealing with any incidents of cyberbullying or the misuse of phones. Community connections The school management consulted with  HYPERLINK "http://www.netsafe.org.nz/" Netsafe and its resources. The school management liaised with two other secondary schools whose students were also involved in some of the cyberbullying incidents, to prevent recurrence or any negative repercussions. Parents were informed by letters at regular intervals about risks to students from using internet sites and other online media. The letters also encouraged parents to supervise their children online and enforce safe practices. Parents and students have also been instructed to report any cyberbullying and ask for help if they need it. Curriculum teaching and learning The SCO supported the delivery of cyberbullying lessons to a number of classes in the school, and provided handouts on cyber safety.ImpactThere have been no further serious incidents of cyberbullying. Next stepsMore time could be allocated to implementing student inquiry into online safety. An information evening could be held for parents with speakers who are knowledgeable about the digital world (e.g., Netsafe) to discuss online safety issues. ObstaclesThe main obstacle is that there is no cyberbullying programme currently provided by Police. This lack in fact created an opportunity the school and Police subsequently developed teaching material suited to the specific needs of the students. Curriculum timetabling and limited Police time were also issues to be overcome.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if the school implemented online safety education for all classes, revisiting the topic regularly to maintain a culture of zero tolerance for cyberbullying. ConclusionThe school is proud of achieving increased awareness of online safety among students and a reduction in serious incidents of cyberbullying.
