Some drivers arent aware that there is a school at that location. Students cross the road in the wrong place. Identification and prioritisationRoad Policing staff team identified the speeding problem around the school while doing their patrols. The school also informed their SCO that students were not crossing in the right place. Short-term goalTo increase drivers awareness of the presence of the school. To ensure that students cross the road in the designated spot.Long-term goalFewer vehicles around the school will exceed the speed limit. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school became involved in  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise, an innovative school-based programme that aims to improve road safety and achieve a reduction in the number of vehicles driving to and from school at peak times. It does this by encouraging and increasing alternative modes of travel, and providing safer facilities for all road users. School staff have kept Police informed about the state of road safety in their area. Community connections Together with Police and Auckland Transport the school ran a slow down around school campaign to educate drivers. Notices were sent to parents about the campaign. Curriculum teaching and learning All junior classes have received lessons from  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources.ImpactAs a result of this intervention some students have been heard telling their parents they need to slow down at the kea crossing. Students showed better awareness of safe places to cross the road. Next stepsNext steps would be to deliver the road safety lessons at least every second year and promote the slow down around school message on three or four mornings each year.ObstaclesThe main obstacles were parents who just want to get their child across the road to school quickly and don't want to walk the 30 m to the crossing. Explaining to parents why they need to cross at the kea crossing has changed some parents behaviour, but many more still cross in the wrong area. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: surveying students and parents beforehand and following this up with surveys in June and November to observe changes holding more slow down around school campaigns holding a back to school safely campaign gaining more parent involvement. ConclusionThe school was most proud of how well their students engaged with the campaigns.
