It was well known by Police, support agencies and the school staff that many students in the school were victims of family violence, mainly through being exposed to it in the family home.Identification and prioritisationIssues identified through data from: SMS: Reports in the Student Management System of suspected family violence. These reports included private/confidential data from school counsellors/social workers. Students: A proportion of students had been victims of family violence. 1 in 7 young people report being harmed on purpose at home in New Zealand. Police data: Every 5 minutes police attend 1 family violence incident. The area around Tamaki College was well-known for family violence.Short-term goalStudents lead discussions on family violence. An increase in student engagement.Long-term goalStudents become active champions within their community for changing attitudes towards family violence. An increase in student NCEA achievement, through having a learning environment free from family violence.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Policies: BOT reviewed their Child Abuse policy. Skilled staff: Senior management developed and maintained Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) within Tamaki College, and offered NCEA credits for working on the project. Safe environment: Senior management and SCO worked together to maintain the school environment and to consult on how to improve on it. Community connections Consultation: Annual online questionnaire to consult with teachers, students and outside agencies. Collaboration: Senior management and SCO consulted with relevant outside agencies and community groups about policy and teaching programmes. This included Family Works (SHINE), Glen Innes Family Centre, and Tamaki Community Development Trust. Model Parents: Senior management communicated with parents and worked with them around the issue of family violence. Curriculum teaching and learning Myself: Senior management, students, Police and outside agencies produced a  HYPERLINK "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld2mH_Z-wSo&feature=youtu.be" student led video. My friends: Teaching programme covered No child should live in fear. My community: Teaching programme provided the opportunity for students to run engaging, informative events centered on family violence: Tamaki College Family Violence Awareness Day held on 5th July 2016 White Ribbon Day event held at Tamaki College at which students worked with Family Works worked to spread the message. ImpactSMS: Increased reports to social workers. Parents: Over 100 parents/family members attended Family Violence Awareness Day. Students: Survey results: 80% now understood what makes a healthy relationship. 90% know what to do if abused and who could help. 80% of students indicated that they wanted to be a School Champion and carry on the message that family violence should not be tolerated. A quote from a student in the survey was that the workshops helped spread awareness that family violence should be addressed, not ignored. Family violence is New Zealands shame. Police data: Remained static as at the start of the intervention. Police data will continue to be monitored over time, as impact is more likely in the long term than immediately. Next stepsTamaki College will compare student achievement in NCEA next year for an increase due to a learning environment free from family violence. BOT will review the impact of their child abuse policy. Intervention plan will be reviewed at the start of Term 1 2017 to see if a follow-up is warranted that school year. ObstaclesNo significant obstacles because Tamaki College were very positive in highlighting family violence as a driver to harm in the local community. ImprovementsNext year it will be easier to improve, as the basic template is in place.ConclusionThroughout the intervention everyone was 100% behind the issue. Student engagement from the survey was very encouraging, which should show an increase in NCEA achievement.
