Long-term goalBoth staff and students feel safe from bullying behaviour from adults.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Staff discussed what constitutes a safe environment in which it is unacceptable for staff to fear for their safety. Staff discussed this in groups at the staff meeting, and then reported back to the meeting on what this involves, and what actions are necessary to ensure this is maintained. Policy confirmed by BOT, and staff informed about it, so that teachers have a right to teach in a safe environment. The policy includes escalation to senior management to attend any incident and to decide on what action to take. Where appropriate, 111 will be called if the parent is threatening or displays propensity for violence. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Principal consulted with SCO about the process of trespassing a parent, and received all relevant information and forms to implement a trespass order. Consulted with senior staff and lawyers about instigating a trespass order. Liaised with local police station to get trespass order made up. Principal informed parent verbally at the school that if he came back onto the school grounds he would be formally issued with a trespass notice. Childrens awareness through KOS of abuse/bullying reinforced by parent activities.ImpactAbusive parent has not returned to the school grounds. Staff feel safer now that there is a process in place.Next stepsStaff will monitor abuse at weekly staff meetings. Monthly meeting between principal and SCO to monitor situation.ObstaclesThe parents child is currently in year 4, so has over two years left at school. A trespass time ban will cease before the child finishes at this school, if issued now.ImprovementsIt would be good to have surveyed staff on prevalence of bullying by parents, and to have surveyed teachers on their well-being, and whether they feel empowered by the policy. Identifying if there were ways to solve the parents issue and prevent their abusive behaviour could also have been part of the intervention. ConclusionIn discussion with Principal, the problem appears to be resolved even though the trespass notice is at the school and has not been issued. The parent has been notified that it will be delivered if he comes back on school grounds. Overall it has been a good result for the school community, with clear lines of process/policy laid out in relation to staff and child safety.
