Kennerley SummaryParking issues impacting on safe walking. IssueThere had been increase of the schools roll, causing increased parking congestion. Vehicles were parking on yellow lines, making crossing the road at the Kea Crossing difficult. The footpath had dangerous potholes and uneven surfaces.Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified and prioritised when the Police and school staff noticed that parents were parking on the yellow lines or double-parking outside the school, and some parents complained. Each day there were 10-15 cars parking on the yellow lines. Illegal parking obstructed the view of the School Traffic Safety Team, making it difficult to get students across the road safely. Parents and staff were concerned that someone was going to get hurt when crossing the road. In addition five students had fallen over on the footpath outside the school on one day.Short-term goalTo communicate the dangers of illegal parking on the yellow lines. To repair the footpath.Long-term goalTo install 10-minute parking and drop off signs, so parents can park by the school. That no-one will be parking on the yellow lines. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The pedestrian crossing was altered and raised. Staff monitoring the School Traffic Safety Team actively encouraged students and whnau to use the correct crossing points. All relevant school policies were reviewed and updated where needed. School sent out newsletters informing parents not to park on the yellow lines, and explaining why it is dangerous to do so. Community connections Discussion with Auckland Transport (AT) about parking issues and the state of the footpath. AT installed new parking signs on a six-month trial. AT patched the footpath where it was damaged. While AT engineers were working on the parking issue, they came to the conclusion the traffic on the road was travelling too quickly. So they installed two speed humps - one for the Kea Crossing to help with the students being able to see further.
