Identification and prioritisationIn the two years prior to this intervention there were five reported incidents of theft or burglary where students of the school had been either suspects or offenders. CCTV footage and witnesses identified that the offences were committed by students of the school. These offending students displayed negative attitudes towards the Police and authority in general, and didnt appear to think they had done wrong. This intervention was to stop these incidents from escalating.Short-term goalPromote the role of the Police to classes and engage with students to enable them to see police officers as regular people who they can talk to and come to for advice or help. Security features were advertised amonst the students, students associates who may be offending, and parents. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) A police officer regularly talked to and bonded with the offending students. Students reacted positively and engaged well with him. Police took part in numerous activities to build trust and confidence across the whole school community. Police gave some students recognition for good character. Police and other prominent community members read stories to younger students. Curriculum teaching and learning Education in the classroom through  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/doing-right-thing" Doing the Right Thing where students learned how to become responsible citizens who respect others and the law, and helped them to understand the concepts of right and wrong. Police presented  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/living-safe-community" Role of the Police, covering sworn to non-sworn roles. A number of students expressed an interest in becoming police cfficers.ImpactSince the intervention there have been no reported burglaries or offences at the school. There has also been an improvement in students attitudes where they were genuinely friendly and pleased to see the School Community Officer. Next stepsPolice will continue to be in the school on a regular basis in various capacities, and so be seen as part of the wider school community.ObstaclesPre-conceived attitudes some of the students had towards the Police.
