Students having issues dealing with confrontation in a non-aggressive manner.Identification and prioritisationThe school identified that some students had been getting into aggressive confrontations in public and at school with other students. Some of confrontations were with Police.Short-term goalBuild a partnership with the school, Police and  HYPERLINK "http://alternativeeducation.tki.org.nz/Service-academies" Service Academy, to build trust and confidence towards Police.Long-term goalA significant reduction in reported (and non-reported) incidents of aggressive confrontation.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) As aligned to their Catholic values, the mentor used examples of dealing with confrontation in a non-violent way from the Bible. The students were challenged to come up with ways in which they could apply these principles to their lives and in particular to the confrontational situations they had been in. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) A mentor from the  HYPERLINK "http://alternativeeducation.tki.org.nz/Service-academies" Service Academy worked with more at-risk students to improve their understanding of the value of hard work, with a marked improvement in their general success at school and in the community. A police officer was regularly in the school talking to students, helping out during lessons, coaching the students and effectively being someone they could feel comfortable talking to about anything. Police and the mentor coached students of the Service Academy in boxing to instill a disciplined outlet for their energy. Curriculum teaching and learning Classroom lessons to help students understand the importance and impact of more passive responses to confrontational situations. Students took part in a week-long survival course at Hobsonville Military Base, where they not only learned survival techniques but also ways in which to work as a team and deal with difficult and sometimes confrontational situations.ImpactThere has been an improvement in students attitudes towards the Police going into the school, as indicated by their genuinely friendly manner with the School Community Officer. Measuring the change of reported incidents has not yet been completed, as the intervention is still ongoing.Next stepsNext term the school will utilise the services of  HYPERLINK "https://www.logos.org.nz/" LOGOS, a Catholic youth development organisation tosupport young people, as they explore who they are and what they can become. To continue with the same effective strategies in Term 4 as in the first three terms of this year, including using respected role models such as Bible figures and sporting personalities, on how to behave in various situations students may be confronted with in life.ObstaclesPre-conceived attitudes that some of the students had towards the Police, but through patient and persistent work in partnership with the school, and particularly their mentor, these appear to be diminishing.ImprovementsThere is always room for improvement, so Police, school and outside agencies will continue to analyse and, where necessary, improve the work that is being done.ConclusionWill continue to work together to seek ways to enable the intervention to have an even more effective impact and outcome. So far, all seems to be going well and the feedback has been very positive.
