Bicknell School Community OfficerSummaryIncreasing the safety of students outside the school gates.IssueThere were concerns with the safety of students arriving at school because of the busy road at the front entrance of the school, and because students did not always use the school patrol-controlled crossing. Parents were not always good role models in choosing the safest route into school, and often parked on yellow lines to pick up and drop off students. Identification and prioritisationSchool staff observed the behaviour of parents and students. Short-term goalThe school traffic safety team will receive training to operate the school patrol. Road safety lessons will be held for all students. All junior students will receive practice in using the school patrol-operated crossing. Long-term goalTo educate the school community about road safety near the school and the laws governing school crossings. To establish and maintain effective and efficient student members and supervisors for the school patrol. The school community will use the school crossing correctly and use the road in front of the school safely.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment School management meetings discussed the need for teachers to improve their knowledge of the responsibilities of a school patrol supervisor. The system for rostering teachers to supervise the school patrol was improved, and the importance of this requirement was reinforced by school management staff. All teachers received training on the responsibilities of a school patrol supervisor. Staff ensured that the school policy to chain off the school entrance before and after school (to prevent vehicles driving through at peak times) was carried out. Community connections Regular Police patrols took place to enforce safe and legal vehicle use before and after school. Through the weekly school newsletters parents/whnau were: encouraged to improve their driving behavior at the school entrance informed how unsafe behaviour puts students safety at risk given clear guidelines of the expected driver and pedestrian behaviour in front of the school. The SCO monitored behaviour and spoke to infringing parents. Curriculum teaching and learning Training was provided for the school patrol and their efficiency was monitored. All students received lessons from Police HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources. All junior students were given practice in crossing at the school crossing. Students were given road safety home activities to share/do with their family, and family members came for a practical walk with the students.ImpactAs a result of the intervention the school patrols were better attended and supervised by adults. Students and adults became more aware of how to be safe at the entrance area of the school and the number of adults and students using the school crossing increased. Adults showed improvement in their parking, drop off and pick up behaviour. Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention are to: maintain the training and monitoring of students in the school patrol provide teachers with training each year on supervisor responsibilities ensure Police patrols at the school entrance at the beginning and end of the school day regularly remind families of road safety in the school newsletter.ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the reluctance of some adults to alter their behaviour. This was reduced by Police patrols and the issuing of parking tickets for non-compliance. ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if it offered senior students the challenge of solving this issue and taking part in the planning. The school focuses on e-learning, and could have used this expertise to film the entrance to the school before and after the intervention. Students could have created relevant posters for display around the school and publication in the school newsletter. Useful resources for this education are available on the New Zealand Transport Agencys HYPERLINK "http://education.nzta.govt.nz/"education portal.ConclusionThe school is most proud of how the safety of students at the school entrance has improved at the beginning and end of each school day.
