A bigger bus was needed to take students to after-school care, which meant it could no longer manoeuvre into the bus bay and began parking on the road, obstructing the view of the school patrols. Identification and prioritisationThe principal identified the concerns. As a result, the road safety coordinator, the SCO and the principal discussed the issue and considered solutions. Short-term goalA new location will be established for the bus stop. Long-term goalParents will model safe road use and reinforce safety messages to their children.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment As an interim response, a teacher aide coned off parking spaces for the bus every afternoon. The bus bay was also cordoned off each day to stop parents from using this area to pick up their children. The students waiting for the bus were supervised by the teacher aide, who was also monitoring the school patrols. Community connections The SCO regularly spoke at the schools Kick Start for New Entrants programme, advising parents about the schools expectations of pedestrian safety. The road safety coordinator reprinted a pamphlet promoting safe parking practices and explaining parents responsibilities when picking up their children. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior students received lessons from Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources focused on safety in and around cars, safe places to cross the road, and kerb drill. Senior students completed cycling lessons so that they can start riding on the road to and from school safely and in accordance with the rules of the road.ImpactThe local council approved the relocation of the bus stop. Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention are to: advise new parents of the alternative entrances to the school from which they can pick up their children deliver safe passenger education for students who are now using the bus monitor the use of the bus stop to ensure that parents are using it only when permitted to do so consider and promote alternative ways for parents to get students to and from school (car pooling, walking school bus) in order to reduce congestion. ObstaclesParents were reluctant to consider the safety of all students, not just their own child. This was overcome by consistent messages to parents. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by creating an indented bus bay, which would move the bus further out of the traffic lane. Increasing the bus service would cut down the number of students travelling to school by car. ConclusionThe school is proud of how the ongoing cooperation of Police, the council and the school has resulted in a solution to issues of students safety.
