Identification and prioritisationStatistics obtained at a Teen Driver Expo showed that out of the 218 students, over half had no drivers licence, 81 had only a learners licence, 23 had a restricted licence and only 4 students had a full licence. Teachers of Literacy For Life (a course using real and relevant contexts for learning, designed for senior students who struggle with basic literacy skills) wanted a programme in which students could achieve credits for NCEA, which the Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/resources-scs-school-road-safety-programmes-years-9-13" Drive Qual programme appeared to address. Short-term goalTo increase students understanding of the risk factors relating to driving. To change students attitudes towards driving-related offending for example, breaching graduated licence, alcohol and texting restraints.Long-term goalStudents will move through the graduated licensing system before leaving school and entering the workforce.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Teaching staff were supportive of and proactive during the intervention. The school has a student-led Students Against Driving Drunk group which attempts to focus on safe driving practices. Community connections Students were offered the opportunity to attend the  HYPERLINK "http://www.taupodc.govt.nz/our-services/road-safety/Pages/Driver-Directions.aspx" Driver Directions training day providing free off-road driving tuition under expert supervision. Police and the South Waikato Lifelong Learning Group investigated services that assist young drivers to move through their graduated licence, identified why some programmes failed, and planned new initiatives. Curriculum teaching and learning The school aligned sensible driver behaviour to the key competency of managing self, and aligned Literacy for Life to the key competency of using language, symbols, and texts. Literacy for Life classes completed a module from Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/resources-scs-school-road-safety-programmes-years-9-13" Drive Qual resources on driving hazards and risk reduction responses. The SCO supported lessons on the risks associated with texting and driving. ImpactSome students acknowledged their own risk-taking behaviours and appeared to respond in a positive manner.Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention are to: obtain more positions for young drivers on Driver Directions by means of funding from the South Waikato District Council address the problems young people have in getting a job if they do not have at least their restricted licence investigate making driver training part of the school curriculum.ObstaclesThe main obstacles were difficulty in obtaining Drive Qual work books, due to a change of processes by the new Motor Industry Training Organisation. Under the MITO accreditation rules the school incurs an extra cost if it delivers the complete Drive Qual programme. This prevented teaching staff from delivering all the modules in the programme. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: greater flexibility in allowing registered teachers to deliver and assess the MITOs unit standards in Drive Qual easier access to the MITO workbooks driver licensing and training being made part of the outcome of students learning at the college. When the emphasis on achieving NCEA credits it is a challenge to fit road safety into an already crowded curriculum. ConclusionThe school is proud of its students positive and responsible attitude towards their own well-being, and of having assisted Police in increasing young peoples awareness of road safety.
