Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified by the deputy principal, and involved the SCO and the district engineer from the district council. The school obtained verbal information from parents and students to help identify the issues about the safety of the crossing. To identify any major issues, information was also sought from Police on the number of complaints relating to the crossing and the number of traffic and parking notices issued in its vicinity. Short-term goalTo have a safer pedestrian crossing with more effective road markings so that the area outside the school is a safer place to cross after school. To investigate the possibility of having the crossing upgraded from traffic wardens to school patrols. This was achieved in the third term of 2014. Long-term goalStudents and parents leaving school in the afternoon will bemore safety conscious in their use of the road. Students and teachers who operate the crossing will measure this by monitoring the behaviour of students, parents and motorists. The SCO will also monitor and check Police records for public complaints and parking and driving notices issued since the installation of the new crossing control. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Ongoing road safety training was begun for students. The pedestrian crossing was upgraded, allowing the school to change from traffic wardens to a school patrol (signs were supplied by the council). Road markings near the crossing were changed to comply with traffic laws. New parking signs were erected near the crossing. Supervising school staff were informed of the operation requirements for the new school patrol. Community connections Parents were informed of the changed operation of crossing. Consultation with the local district council has and will be ongoing. Initial contact with the council was by phone, followed by an on-site meeting between the school, the SCO and the local district engineer. Curriculum teaching and learning Students were given training on how the new crossing operates. Because of the quick action by SCO, the school and the district council, student involvement was limited until training was required for the new operation of the crossing. ImpactParents and students have become more aware of safety around the crossing. Observation shows that the area is now safer for both students and motorists. There has been traffic enforcement of illegal parking, and infringement notices have been issued for parking breaches. Next stepsContinued training of existing and future patrollers as required. ObstaclesSome parents were uncertain about how the new crossing would operate, but Police visiting the crossing and speaking to parents who were present overcame any uncertainty. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by more and better dialogue between the school and the district council.
