Brownrigg School Community OfficerSummaryIncreasing the safety of students when crossing a busy rural road.IssueTeachers identified that the students were at risk when crossing a road to go to the local hall. Visibility at the crossing point was a short distance in each direction. The 100 km/h rural road was frequently used by heavy vehicles and other traffic supporting the local oil drilling operations.Identification and prioritisationThe Principal initially approached Police to set up a 40 km/h zone outside the school. Police believed it would be more practical to install an electronic School Zone sign, and a pedestrian barrier on the roadside outside the school. The Principal worked with a local oil company to obtain funding for the sign. The local council considered these suggestions. Short-term goalTo install a School Zone sign at the crossing (solar powered and controlled by a timer in the school office). Long-term goalTo lower the speed of vehicles near the school, as measured by feedback from teachers and students. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Site meetings were held to get an appreciation of the road, visibility factors and the need for the school to be able to access the hall safely. In the end the pedestrian barrier was not installed (because of concerns over loss of car parks for the hall), but a gate was made in the school fence nearer the crossing point. Community connections Discussions were held between the district council engineers, Police, the school and the oil company to work out what was needed and what funding was required. The principal met with the hall committee and other hall users to discuss the implications for parking outside the hall if a barrier was installed. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received ongoing education on the correct use of the crossing area, and pedestrian behaviour expected beside the road.ImpactThe intervention resulted in an improved relationship between the school, the community who use the hall, and a local business whose activities contributed to the safety problem. This business part funded a safety solution and the council sped up the process of getting the signs installed.Next stepsThe next steps are to: educate students and teachers about the correct procedures to be done by the Principal gather information to see if the signs do change driver behaviour to make the crossing safer for students. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the cost of the signs ($26,000). This cost will now be covered, half by the oil company and half by the council. ConclusionThe school was proud to show by this intervention that they and the community care about student safety. Some funding became available and they were able to put it to great use.
