Some members of the group were also identified as trying to light fires at schools. Identification and prioritisationThe spate of fire lighting at the hospital was identified by Police intelligence staff, and patrols were increased. Offenders were located, but as they didn't admit to lighting fires, no charges were laid, although they were trespassed. Police also identified that two fires at other schools were similar, and witnesses identified some of the suspects. The deputy principal and other school staff advised that one of the suspects often played with fire in the school. They didn't want the whole school spoken to because it might cause copycat fires. The Fire Service advised that the main suspect had previously attended a fire awareness programme. In addition, a Police social worker found that the female students family was concerned about her behaviour.Short-term goalTo ensure that the suspects dont enter the abandoned hospital. To ensure that those involved are dealt with and that the main offenders get help to prevent further offending. Long-term goalTo eliminate arson at the hospital caused by the schools students.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Meetings were held between the deputy principal, staff and Police to discuss the students involved and the best way to tackle the problem. Community connections The main offender was referred to the Fire Service for a fire awarenes programme. Curriculum teaching and learning The main offender was educated by the Fire Service. ImpactNone of the schools students were found in the hospital over the following months.Next stepsThe next step is to ensure that any reports of students hanging around the hospital are followed up.ObstaclesThe school did not want to increase the profile of the offending, in case it triggered copycat activity.
