In some cases they live within a couple of blocks of the school, but are still dropped off and picked up at the school gate. This is increasing traffic congestion around the school and creating a heightened risk zone for students. The lack of exercise in our youth is also creating a serious health concern. Research shows that children and youth are more at risk of offending and victimisation if they are disconnected from family and or community. They are less at risk if they receive recognition and praise for positive behaviour, have stable, warm relationships and have healthy boundaries.Identification and prioritisationThe principal identified a noticeable increase in the number of students being driven to and from school. The number of cars caused congestion around the school and increased the risk of students being struck by a motor vehicle. There has been a dramatic decrease in the number of students biking to school. The school has noticed that students are less fit and more frequently overweight. This is supported by the Ministry of Healths  HYPERLINK "http://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/obesity" statistics on childhood obesity. Police have observed increasing traffic congestion around school zones and minor offending such as parking on yellow lines.Short-term goalTo increase the number of families who use active forms of transport, from 13 families now to at least 26 families, by the end of Term 4. To empower students to walk, run, scooter or bike to school as part of their normal daily activities. To build positive relationships between parents/caregivers and students while coming to and from school.Long-term goalTo maintain students physical activity in travelling to and from school, accompanied by parents/caregivers to also build healthy relationships. To reduce the health risks associated with being unfit and overweight. To provide a safe environment free of road trauma. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The principal worked to promote Operation Self Driven (a local initiative to reduce the number of students taken to school by car) by encouraging parents to come into the school to record their names in the family room. The sign-in book was placed in the family room. Members of the family room were encouraged to use this tool to get more parents involved in the school environment. It was a good way to meet more parents. The principal and staff encouraged parents to walk, bike, or scooter to and from school, both personally and through school media newsletter, memos and Facebook page. Teachers encouraged parents to come into the classroom. Community connections Parents and caregivers came into the school, as opposed to sitting in their cars waiting for their children to come out of school. The final prize-giving for Operation Self Driven was held in the town centre with participating schools and sponsors attending. The Neighbourhood Policing team, Traffic and Youth Aid Section rewarded students for positive behaviour out in the community,. Curriculum teaching and learning There were no actions in this component (see under Improvements below).ImpactPolice noticed an increase in the number of students walking, running, scootering or biking to school as part of their normal daily activities, accompanied by parents/caregivers. A greater number of students were seen waving to police and doing the right thing. The teachers and principals found Operation Self Driven a very positive exercise, resulting in increased physical activity and more contact with parents and families. The first short-term goal was achieved. Over a 6 week period the number of families walking, running, scootering or biking to school as part of their normal daily activities grew from 13 families to 26 families. This is double the previous number and involves over 40 students. It also meant 26 fewer cars on the road. Parents found the time spent with their children walking, running, scootering or biking to and from school very valuable and good for their own health, as well as that of their children. Next stepsTo do Operation Self Driven again, and build on the project. During Term 4 we will gather data and build up sponsorship to run the project again in Term 1 2016. We will work more closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Bluelight.ObstaclesSponsorship and available time.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by assigning a Police officer to each school involved in the initiative curriculum teaching and learning as a component of a whole-school approach was not used in this intervention next time we would include health education content into the school curriculum to support Operation Self Driven involving the students in coming up with and promoting strategies to increase walking, scooting or cycling to school. ConclusionThis has been a very worth-while intervention that offers increased health and stronger relationships between parents/caregivers, Police, and schools, and a helps create a safer community.
