A meeting of the heads of departments, Deans, Deputy Principal and the Principal discussed the issues that had been reported to the Police regarding cybersafety and sexting issues. They decided to educate all the students (years 9-13) about the risks and the laws surrounding cyber abuse. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) The school partnered with Police, including the School Community Officer (SCO) and the Youth Aid Officer. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) A separate cybersafety assembly was arranged for each of the five year levels, attended by the SCO and the Youth Aid Officer.ImpactAs a result of this intervention there have been less reports of cyber abuse. Next stepsTo provide ongoing education on cybersafety, as this information and the laws are evolving, so the information for students must be kept current.ObstaclesWhile it would have been preferable to discuss with students in smaller group sizes, time restraints prevented this occurring. ImprovementsIn the future it would be more effective if: lessons occurred in smaller/class groups for better discussion and engagement the school policy clarified reporting processes, school responses and data recording, so as to measure the effectiveness of the intervention information about the assemblies was provided to parents, with suggestions on how they can help teachers were provided information about cybersafety, and procedures to follow when students disclosed students were involved in the problem-solving process right from the start, and could make suggestions to solve the problem. ConclusionFeedback from students stated that they found the presentation informative and worthwhile. This intervention enhanced the police-school partnership.
