Kendrick School Community OfficerSummaryIncreasing the safety of students when travelling to and from school on foot, by bus or by car.IssueThe school is located on a road that leads off a state highway. The issues were unsafe pedestrian behaviour by students, concerns over the safety of the schools many students who travel by bus, and the need to make parents aware of safe car seat use.Identification and prioritisationThe issues were identified by the school, which contacted the SCO for assistance with classroom and practical sessions on pedestrian and passenger safety for all year groups. Short-term goalYounger students will learn basic pedestrian and passenger safety skills. Older students and adults will act as good role models.Long-term goalStudents will use appropriate behavior when walking, in cars, or on the bus. Students will influence adult members of the community to reinforce road safety. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The requirements for car seats were included in permission forms for parents to transport students. The school reviewed its bus safety procedures were reviewed and will send the policy out annually to families. Bus wardens were appointed and daily seating checks were initiated. School staff took part in planning the intervention. Community connections Parents were kept informed by regular school newsletters, pamphlets and through the schools website. Regular (and ongoing) consultation was held with the community and the board of trustees. The bus company supported the practical activities for bus safety. Plunket was consulted on car seat use. The local councils road safety coordinator and the community constable were involved in the intervention. Curriculum teaching and learning All classes received road safety education, supported by the SCO. Junior students practiced kerb drill on a familiar route, supervised by the SCO, the classroom teacher and a number of senior students. Senior students were challenged as to what they should do to ensure the safety of younger students and to be good role models. Senior students worked with younger classes to model appropriate behaviour. Bus wardens were trained and identified to all students. ImpactAs a result of the intervention most senior students accepted the responsibility of being good role models .Teachers observed improvements in pedestrian safety, particularly that older students took responsibility for younger students. Teachers modelled and reinforced road safety e.g., when crossing the road to retrieve a ball. Bus safety has improved, and there is very good communication between the bus company and the school. Car seats are more often being used correctly. Next stepsThe next step for this intervention is to ensure: regular road safety education, to prevent unsafe practices creeping in ongoing communication and consultation with the school community to inform future plans.ObstaclesThe main obstacle was to get parents to attend information meetings. This was dealt with by: sending out newsletters and pamphlets having students discuss safety learning with families as part of homework recognising safe road use through an award system for students. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by investigating safe routes and not compromising on the ratio of adults to students in lessons. ConclusionThe school is proud of the way senior students have taken responsibility for the safety of younger students, students academic progress as a result of the programme, their ability to say what to do in various traffic situations, and the way they demonstrate the skills they have learned in everyday situations without prompting by teachers. School staff are now confident in continuing to reinforce road safety within this and other curriculum areas. The school is also proud of the strong relationship it has achieved with Police to address problems that affect students safety, and the way in which Police, students, staff and caregivers have worked together to meet community goals.
