As a Catholic school, St Anthonys wanted to incorporate Catholic teaching as global learning over a broad range of health and physical well-being topics. Identification and prioritisationThe school met with the SCO. It had not previously implemented a whole-school approach to child protection (such as  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-5" Keeping Ourselves Safe) and so required greater support. It also wanted to ensure that its special character remained intact. Short-term goalTo implement Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) over the school.Long-term goalAll students and the wider school community will have the skills and knowledge to help prevent child abuse. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment With the support of the SCO the school updated its relevant policies and procedures. Teachers met with the SCO to discuss KOS, ask questions, and seek support on how to teach it. The school created an open-door policy for parents/caregivers to discuss any concerns about child safety and welfare. Community connections Two information meetings were held for parents/caregivers (one in the morning and one in the evening). Parents received newsletters that explained KOS and summarised the intended learning outcomes. Some KOS resources were sent home before, during, and (where necessary) after the programme. Homework activities were sent home so that parents/caregivers could reinforce the appropriate messages. Curriculum teaching and learning The entire school completed the KOS programme with the support of the SCO. The teaching staff looked for opportunities within lessons to incorporate and enrich Catholic teaching and perspectives. Other health and safety programmes that complemented KOS were also implemented, including  HYPERLINK "http://www.getfirewise.org.nz/" Firewise,  HYPERLINK "https://www.redcross.org.nz/what-we-do/in-new-zealand/people-savers/" People Savers, personal health concepts through  HYPERLINK "http://www.lifeeducation.org.nz/" Life Education, and health concepts relating to individual class interests and specific needs. On the advice of the SCO delivery of a Catholic programme on puberty was delayed, as it might have a negative influence on the development of healthy relationships if taught too close to KOS. ImpactThe wider school community has become more aware of the need for child protection. Some parents have reported further conversations at home relating to domestic incidents. Families have made greater efforts to build connections with their neighbours, leading to greater community awareness and participation. There were no disclosures of abuse during KOS, but months later a junior student was able to using knowledge gained from the programme to deal with a difficult situation involving a college-age student on a school bus. Next stepsThe next steps are to: ensure KOS or an equivalent programme is undertaken regularly review and ratify the schools child protection policies and procedures every 2 years consult the community over the schools health and physical well-being programme every 2 years.ObstaclesIt was difficult to engage parents/caregivers to attend KOS meetings. As a result some assumed that KOS was sex education. The Principal dealt with each familys concerns individually. Material was added to the  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-5" KOS for years 78 resources to cover cyber safety and bullying. This came from other Police and NetSafe resources and required extra time spent by the SCO and teachers. A student was withdrawn from the programme, but participated after much consultation with parents/caregivers and other parties involved.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: involving the students in finding ways to engage parents/ caregivers and get them to come to the meetings using other incentives to encourage families to attend (e.g., offering babysitting services, having a shared dinner beforehand, consulting the community on best times, or incorporating discussions with more enticing topics such as the physical education/sports programme) getting other NGO agencies to offer other parenting services to address other issues that can impact on families updating the current KOS years 7 and 8 resources to meet current student needs and issues in an interactive and engaging way. ConclusionThe school is proud of strengthening the relationship between Police, students, staff and families to meet community goals and effectively address future issues of student safety. The staff are proud of ensuring that Catholic theology remains the purpose and reason of the programme. They are confident in their ability to continue reinforcing these concepts within other curriculum areas, and to implement this programme in the future. The students are proud of knowing what to do if they are home alone.
