As parking is limited, parents often parked where the school bus parks, or where it was difficult for school patrols to see. Parents often double parked or made dangerous U turns. Identification and prioritisationThe principal initially consulted Police. A council roading engineer and the SCO reviewed the situation. It was agreed that there was a problem requiring both a change in the road layout and parent education. Short-term goalThree drop off and pick up zones will be created. Long-term goalAll students will alight from and enter vehicles safely. Congestion around the school will be reduced. How and when parents collect their children from school will change. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A drop off and pick up zone was created, with appropriate road markings and signposts advising that it was a drop off and pick up zone from 2.453.15 pm. School staff wearing high-visibility vests were rostered at each drop off and pick up area to direct students into their parents vehicles. Community connections The school worked with the city council, which agreed to the road changes outside the school, and sent out plans for approval by the board of trustees. ٴletters were sent to parents on bright paper outlining the new system. Curriculum teaching and learning No student learning was included in the intervention.ImpactCongestion levels in the morning and afternoon have dropped. Parents are finding the drop off and pick up zones very useful, and the flow of traffic around the school has improved considerably. Next stepsThe next step is to get more parents using the drop off and pick up zones. ObstaclesThe main obstacles were: the time it took to begin the road work this took a lot of interaction by the school and Police with the council (however, once the work got under way it was completed very quickly, which did not give the school time for extensive communication with parents) parents parking cars in the drop off and pick up zones before the allocated times (this can be solved through education and enforcement if necessary) education for parents to use the new system. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by liaising more closely with the council about time frames during the early stages of the project.
