McMellon School Community Officer SummaryIncreasing the safety of students when cycling to school.IssueOngoing concerns with students cycling to school and their awareness of the road rules and their responsibilities as road users. The school is surrounded by many busy roads and challenging intersections. Many parents do not allow their children to cycle to school through fear for their safety on the road. These factors caused chaos at the school gate before and after school as parents tried to park to drop off or pick up their children. Identification and prioritisationThe school and Police received complaints from motorists about students unsafe cyclist behaviour at certain intersections. Short-term goalAll students will receive education on using specific intersections safely. Long-term goalMore students will cycle to school safely. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment School policy requires students to wear a reflective jacket if they cycle to school. This is strongly enforced by the school. The school also has a strict policy on wearing safety gear when cycling no helmet, no vest, no cycle to school. Community connections Parents were sent a notice that their child was receiving education on cycling safety. Students were encouraged to bring their own cycles. Some were also borrowed from the SCO and from BikeNZ so that there were cycles for those who couldnt bring one to school. Sport Manawatu and BikeNZ assisted with all the practical lessons. Parents helped mark out the road ride test component of the cycling module. Students are given maps to mark their safest route to and from school these are shared with parents and are kept in their log books for reference. Curriculum teaching and learning The Polices  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-7-8" Road Safe (for years 78) resource was condensed into five lessons, culminating in a road test with the SCO and BikeNZ over a predetermined course. This will be delivered biennially. A group of students produced a movie clip showing students how to ride correctly through the intersections surrounding the school. This is shown at the beginning of the year to a full assembly, with the SCO explaining each intersection.ImpactAs a result of this intervention more students are cycling to school. Students feel a lot more confident in negotiating intersections. There have been no further complaints regarding cycling behaviour. Next stepsThe next steps are to continue the biennial cycle safety programme and showing the video in the alternate years. ObstaclesThe obstacles were: the cycle test required a large amount of parent help, but by running four classes at a time enough parents were available to overcome this Some students still did not know how to ride a bicycle. These students were given instruction on the courts by the teacher or BikeNZ instructor, but did not take part in the road lessons. Some students were identified as not able to cycle safely. Their parents were advised that the students could not participate in the road ride unless one of their own parents cycled alongside them. ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if it included a more advanced road cycle ride and after-school lessons covering specific routes that students use to cycle home. ConclusionThe school is proud of having the highest number of students in the city who cycle to school. Cycling is seen as an acceptable way for students to get to school, and the school encourages cycling in every way it can.
