IssueStudents were crossing the intersection of Dublin and Victoria Avenue without looking for vehicles, and crossing between moving vehicles.Identification and prioritisationMembers of the public and the school staff advised Police of near misses and of the dangerous nature in which some students crossed the road. One incident even involved a student running under a truck whilst it was stationary at the intersection, highlighting the serious nature of the issue. The Principal and School Community Officer (SCO) discussed the issue after both had also witnessed the dangerous situation with the students.Short-term goalTo install a School Traffic Safety Team (School Wardens) at the location to ensure students cross safely. Long-term goalTo establish a Kea Crossing at the location, so signs could be used when it was safe to do so.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) A school policy and protocol for traffic management was introduced. The students and teacher supervisors were trained firstly in School Warden systems, followed by more training for Kea Crossing systems. Teachers were trained to supervise the new Kea Crossing. The SCO monitored the crossing on numerous occasions to ensure safe use. Council installed the correct road markings, flags and signs. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Collaboration with the roading engineer at the Whanganui City Council brought about a new working partnership. Parents were spoken to about being role models for their children by using the new Kea Crossing themselves. Other public pedestrians were encouraged by the SCO and supervisor to use the Kea Crossing. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Responsible and mature students were selected and trained to operate the Kea Crossing safely. The whole school was advised of the new crossing location operated by the School Patrols, and the manner in which they would operate.ImpactThere have been no near-miss incidents involving students and vehicles. There have been no complaints from members of the public since the introduction of the Kea Crossing.Next stepsPolice will continue to regularly monitor the crossing. The school will provide ongoing education relating to the Kea Crossing for new entrants.ObstaclesIt became apparent that having School Wardens wasnt sufficient because of the amount of traffic, mainly parents picking up children. The School Wardens had to wait a long time before they could allow students to cross, and students waiting on the pedestrian island made it overcrowded. There was a delay in the installation of the Kea Crossing after establishing that the School Warden system wasnt effective or safe.ImprovementsThe intervention could be improved by allowing the students to use their investigation skills to improve their safety in partnership with the council.ConclusionThe school is more than happy with the new Kea Crossing, which is highly effective in keeping the students safe as they walk home across a very busy road.
