School duty staff in the playground implemented a behaviour management plan after they became aware of the incidents. The families of the students concerned were spoken to in relation to the inappropriate touching, and cooperated with the school with minimisation tactics such as close observation during school breaks. School management discussed at length an appropriate response to tackle the issue, bearing in mind NAG5 and the school Board of Trustees responsibility to provide a safe physical and emotional environment for all students.Short-term goalTo ensure that no further incidences of inappropriate touching take place by the identified students, as well as by any other student. To empower all students to report any incidents of inappropriate touching to adults they trust.Long-term goalTo have no incidents of sexualised touching or assaults take place within the school, and to keep all students safe.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) All staff were made aware of the school policy and procedures regarding student safety, and what to do in the event of inappropriate touching if witnessing it themselves or having it reported to them by a student. The staff were all made aware of the inappropriate touching by two students, and closely monitored them at all times. Students were encouraged to report any incidents that made them feel unsafe, and identified who they could report the matter to. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) The school community, including students families, were consulted with and advised that the school would run  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS). They were also told of the effectiveness of communicating with their children as they undertook KOS at school. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) KOS was delivered to the whole school by teachers, with the assistance of the School Community Officer (SCO). The SCO accompanied duty teachers during school breaks on several unannounced occasions to monitor the students at play, as well as to build further relationships with the students. The schools values of Positivity, Resilience, Integrity, Diligence and Excellence (PRIDE) were incorporated within KOS as a reminder to the students.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, there have been no further reports of inappropriate touching by any students. This was despite an expected potential increase in reports after students received KOS lessons about speaking up about incidents that made them feel unsafe.Next stepsThe SCO will continue to monitor the situation, and keep in regular touch with the school management about student behaviour. The SCO will also visit the school during school break times in an intermittent basis to refresh students on the skills they learned through KOS. ObstaclesSome parents were concerned about the overt nature of KOS, until their worries were eased after a parent meeting with the SCO, during which the resources were explained to them in depth.ImprovementsIn future, rather than waiting for several incidents to take place that require action, immediate reporting and communication will be more effective, as opposed to incidents being historical.ConclusionThe intervention was a success, starting with the issue being identified and prioritised, and leading to discussions between SCO and school management and a set of prevention activities being implemented. As a result, there were no more matters of inappropriate touching by students throughout the whole year.
