Identification and prioritisationRespect is a Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) value within the school. Police data highlighted community family violence calls for service as 120 per month on average. Of these, on average 70 had children present.Short-term goalsTo implement HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/loves-me-not" Loves-Me-Not in the school. To encourage students to seek help through the Guidance Counsellor or trusted staff members. To encourage students to take action to promote healthy relationships within the school community.Long-term goalFor the school community to reflect the goals of the wider community through education, modelling and action.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) School policies and procedures were reviewed and updated. School leaders, including the Guidance Counsellor, became Its Not Okay champions within the wider community campaign, modelling community messaging within the school. Staff were actively encouraged by the Guidance Counsellor to share information for appropriate follow-up with students. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) The Police School Community Officer (SCO), Youth Services, Neighbourhood Policing Team and Family Violence Team were involved as champions for the community campaign, and as facilitators for Loves-Me-Not, providing understanding of relevant issues and forming links between communities. A school and community meeting was held to share information about Loves-Me-Not. The SCO developed relationships with local NGOs and school staff, and acted as a conduit with relevant partners. Police staff, together with other community groups, worked alongside at-risk and model students through the schools HYPERLINK "http://www.waiopehu.ac.nz/Whats-On/Extra-Curricular" CACTUS (Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit and Support)programme during Term 2, to improve relationships and be champions within the community. The SCO worked with the Year 11 module group around driver education, which assisted in maintaining relationships between students and Police, so as they move into Year 12 they are comfortable with and know Police. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Loves-Me-Not was facilitated with Year 12 students. A student action group across all year levels joined with Rotary Horowhenua to become involved with community volunteering. The SCO assisted and provided links to the community. The group looked at how to help at-risk children in the Horowhenua. The school ran ACCs HYPERLINK "https://www.matesanddates.co.nz/" Mates and Dates with Years 9-10 as a pathway leading to Loves-Me-Not in Year 12. PB4L values were reinforced through all learning areas. Girls from the Teen Parent Unit were referred to the Levin Polices Wahine Toa - Women of Courage intervention run by the SCO, with the support of Womens Refuge and the Horowhenua Abuse Liaison Team.ImpactRelationships between students and Police have improved through increased school involvement, which has created new opportunities for Police to engage with school, staff and students. Through Loves-Me-Not, 87% of students identified a clearer understanding of healthy relationships, and 82% believed they would be more likely to act or speak up if they knew someone was in an unhealthy relationship. Despite no longer being in Year 12, several students who took part in last years Loves-Me-Not took action to ensure that a friend of theirs, who was in an unhealthy relationship, was able to participate this year,. A school-wide Interact group was set up, where students could connect with the community. The groups first action was to make up care backpacks for children under 12 who had to leave home unexpectedly due to safety concerns of family violence. The backpacks contained handmade teddy bears, colouring books, underwear, wheat bags and so on. The fifteen backpacks were presented to the SCO and Womens Refuge. The school are working on becoming an official White Ribbon school and have had the white ribbon adopted as part of school uniform.Next stepsEncourage students in the action group to become champions within the community campaign, which will provide a youth perspective on family violence and relationship abuse, and further develop community partnerships. ObstaclesGetting NGOs involved in Loves-Me-Not and other initiatives, which would further develop relationships between the school and wider community. Some NGOs are not paid to deliver these extra programmes, and it places extra pressure on already limited resources. Last year funding was secured, but this year a funding application was not successful. The challenge for school staff because of the competing demands to achieve NCEA credits, rather than social and emotional goals.ImprovementsImproving consultation with parents would make community engagement more effective, both in support of their children as well as through the wider campaign. The school could consider using the context of relationship abuse for assessment of Level 1 and 2 NCEA achievement standards, as suggested in the Loves-Me-Not HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default/files/publications/lmn-implementation-guide-2017.pdf" Implementation Guide. ConclusionThe partnership with key staff at the school has increased Police involvement. This has improved trust and confidence amongst staff and students, and enabled the school community to be active champions in the Its Not Okay campaign in the wider community. Through a collaborative approach, the messages about relationship abuse and family violence have been highlighted. A culture of speaking up is evident within the school, as well as through calls for service within the community.
