The road is a very busy arterial route, with the heaviest traffic flow just before school starts. Heavy trucks also use this route to avoid the towns main street.Identification and prioritisationThis has been an ongoing issue for many years and has been made worse by increased traffic. Police and the school recently identified how difficult the school patrols job had become as a result of the heavy traffic flows. Discussions were held by the principal and Police to resolve the issue. Short-term goalTo make the school patrols job safer and enable them to carry out their duties with more confidence. Long-term goalTo educate daily passing motorists about the new system. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A new split sign system was implemented for the school patrols. School staff were all made aware of the new system so that they were able to supervise the crossing effectively. Community connections Students families and the local community were informed about the changed system. Council traffic wardens were informed about the new system. Parents were advised about the new system in the school newsletter. The local newspaper ran an article on the new system. Curriculum teaching and learning School patrols were trained in the new system. The rest of the school was advised how to use the new system.ImpactThe school patrols now operate more effectively and with more confidence. Next stepsThe next step is ongoing motorist education. ObstaclesThe obstacle was reluctance to change, which was overcome by the students becoming more confident and by the school endorsing this change.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by talking to the newspaper and other media earlier in the process, before the changes were made.ConclusionThe school is most proud of how the students in the school patrol gained new confidence in carrying out their duties.
