Some students were taking questionable photos of themselves and forwarding them to other students. Identification and prioritisationThe issued was identified when a boy at the school asked a girl to take intimate photos of herself and send them to him. He then forwarded them to a lot of students at the school, causing the girl enormous distress.Short-term goalTo educate the students on the perils of such activity. Long-term goalTo change the attitude of students over the use of social media.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The issue was addressed at a school assembly. The school policy on bullying was explained and reinforced. School staff spoke to the main offenders. Staff worked with the victims. Community connections Parents were advised through the school newsletter. The school contacted the SCO for advice on how to best deal with the issue. Curriculum teaching and learning The SCO supported the school with lessons from  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/kia-kaha/kia-3" Kia Kaha (for years 78) and explained the Harmful Digital Communications Bill. ImpactThis intervention increased student awareness of the impact of all types of bullying. Next stepsTo provide ongoing advice to parents and students through assemblies, newsletters and classroom lessons.ObstaclesSome students were reluctant to take responsibility for their actions, brushing the issue off as a joke. This was overcome by education through case studies on the effect of bullying on some students.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by the SCO visiting the school at the start of each term to reinforce the seriousness of any form of bullying. ConclusionThe school is proud of the way students have taken this message on board and how they appreciate the severe consequences of breaching the school policy on bullying.
