IssueIssues with traffic and a crossing outside the school jeopardised students safety when travelling to and from school, and limited their options for active transport. Traffic congestion outside the school also resulted in complaints to the principal, and aggression towards parents and staff from passing motorists.Identification and prioritisationThese issues were identified when the school first opened three years ago. With limited roading development and a large increase of vehicles, this problem has continued to get worse. Road works beginning at the start of the 2016 school year brought this issue to a head in February 2016. Short-term goalTo encourage all students, staff and parents to use the pedestrian-controlled light crossing point in a safe and considerate manner.Long-term goalTo work alongside the school and other agencies in a way that would help in the creation of a new roading system for this newly established school. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) analysis of the school crossing point was done to ensure student safety from an environmental point of view. The school completed a Travelwise review with the community transport advisor at Auckland Transport. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Meetings were held with Papakura Local Board members, staff from the Ministry of Education and Police to discuss the creation of the proposed school road (Papaka Road). Following analysis of the use of the traffic light crossing, Police spoke to several parents to role model their behaviour for other parents to follow. Auckland Transport and Police staff worked together to improve pedestrian and driver behaviour. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) The School Community Officier ran a comprehensive  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety/2-3" Travelling Safely programme with the junior school to make sure all students were aware how to cross safely. Auckland Transport stood outside the school at the crossing point with their cross with the green man resources, both before and after school. A wheels initiative was instigated by the school to encourage more students to bike or scooter to school, rather than being driven by a parent.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, 30% of all students now choose to ride bikes or use scooters as their preferred means of transport to and from school. The school is no longer receiving correspondence from frustrated motorists. The development of a new school road is scheduled to commence in January 2017.Next stepsWith road work on Papaka Road next to the school in January, there will be issues for parents and other drivers during pick-up and drop-off times. These will need to be addressed by Police and Auckland Transport early in the new year. ObstaclesAn us vs them attitude had developed between the school staff manning the traffic light crossing and the drivers using Hingaia Road. This caused animosity and frustration on both sides. With a more positive attitude, the complaints against the school decreased.ImprovementsMore traction could have been gained in the development of Papaka Road if we had ensured that the correct decision-makers were sitting around the table from the beginning. There was little point in meeting with partners who had no influence over those who could affect the real change.ConclusionThe school is proud of progress made around this issue. We are delighted that progress has been made and Papaka Road is scheduled to commence in January 2017.
