During the year there were several near-miss incidents with pedestrians and cyclists. The intervention was prioritised and developed by the principal, the Board of Trustees and the School Community Officer (SCO). Short-term goalTo educate international students about the importance of wearing cycle helmets, and the rules around cycling in New Zealand Long-term goalTo improve parents attitudes about how and when they collect their children from school. Measured by the number of complaints.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) The school reviewed its road safety policy and procedures to improve safety of students travelling to and from school. Volunteers wearing high-visibility vests were rostered to assist cyclists across Oakland Road between the stationary vehicles. The school looked to implement a walking school bus. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) The school, the SCO and Auckland Transport staff considered ways to improve cyclist safety. The school and a local land owner collaborated together to create a new cycle pathway around the corner of Oakland and Hingaia Roads. Parents volunteered their time to assist international students to walk their bikes across the road, avoiding the dangerous intersection. Road Policing were informed of the issues about cycle safety outside the school, and assisted by manning a check point to ensure compliance. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) The SCO spoke with small groups of international students about cycle safety. Auckland Transport and the SCO ran a workshop for all students to make sure they knew how correctly fit and wear a cycle helmet. Auckland Transport facilitated a pedestrian crossing initiative to reinforce road safety at the time of this intervention.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, there was a marked improvement in helmet compliance levels, both before and after school. There have been no reports of near misses or cycle crashes involving Strathallan College students in the six months following this intervention.Next stepsAs the land around the school is being developed, the roading environment will change. Through consultation with Auckland Council and surrounding land owners, the school will be able to have their voice heard around the table. ObstaclesThe attitude of other road users can create challenges for schools. Drivers are resistant to change and did not like it when they were held up, even momentarily, for a cyclist to cross the road in front of them.ImprovementsThis intervention would have been more effective if the SCO had utilised the services of a Korean-speaking police officer during the cycle safety talks to reinforce the learning for students for whom English is a second language. An intervention like this also has scope to involve more student-led action, such as gathering data to set the baseline, coming up with solutions, and measuring results. They could also be a powerful voice to communicate with the local community about road safety in the vicinity of the school.ConclusionThe school is satisfied that there has been an improvement in cycle safety for students traveling to and from school.
