Identification and prioritisationThe school reported to the SCO that there was regular illegal parking and dangerous U-turns by parents when dropping off and picking up their children. The school had previously fully implemented the Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/programme-objectives" Road Safe programme with some junior classes. Priority was given to educating parents on the rules about parking on yellow lines and adhering to road rules.Short-term goalAll parents will be aware of their road safety responsibilities. Long-term goalParents will ensure that all students are safe when they drop off and pick up their own children from school.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school worked with the SCO and Auckland Transport to educate parents. Auckland Transport traffic wardens and Police undertook enforcement duties. All members of the school traffic safety team received training and were supervised when on duty. The school passes to the SCO the registration numbers of offending drivers and the SCO follows this up. Community connections Parents/caregivers were informed by a school newsletter about the road safety education, and warned that parking would be monitored by traffic wardens and Police. Curriculum teaching and learning The school and SCO co-taught the  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safetyhttp:/www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/programme-objectives" Road Safe series for the junior syndicates. ImpactAs a result of this intervention more parents and students now use the pedestrian crossings, as observed by the SCO and teachers. There has been a noticeable reduction in illegal parking and U-turns in front of the main school gate, as observed by SCO, teachers and Auckland Transport. Next stepsOngoing communication with parents through the school newsletter. Ongoing monitoring and enforcement by Auckland Transport traffic wardens and Police of traffic behaviour before and after school. The school is planning to sign up to  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise-schools/" Travelwise to address congestion and safety issues. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the challenge to change the behaviour of reluctant parents. They are motivated by the quickest and easiest option, not the safest. The next obstacle will be in getting volunteers to work on the Travelwise programme.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: implementing road safety education across all levels of the school, and inviting parents to be a part of this encouraging parents to be more involved in student safety at the school gates, and being role models for their children to do the right thing involving all students in taking home the message on how parents should be driving and acting around the school gates. ConclusionThe school is continuing its partnership with Police and Auckland Transport to address this problem. Slowly but surely the message is getting through to parents that students safety in front of and around the school gates is more important than saving time by parking illegally and crossing unsafely.
