Police identified the problem through several complaints from parents of other students based at the school. Short-term goalTo ensure students can recognise what a drug is, how it can be misused, and how to build strategies to say no to drug abuse assertively.Long-term goalAll students will be able to make good safe informed decisions about the use of drugs.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) The school reviewed and updated their Drug Policy to ensure it met the expectations of staff, students and school community. Staff created a safe working environment for all students so that they could start to make safe / good choices for themselves. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) School ran a parent meeting hosted by Peter Thorburn from Abacus Smashed & Stoned. This was well supported and gave the parents the skills to recognise and help their children to be safe with all types of chemical substances, including alcohol, drugs, solvents and so on. It also helped parents to start making safe and sound decisions with their children, rather than against them. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) In Term 1 the School Community Officer supported class teachers with a drug unit for Year 9 students, including the students who had been involved in the huffing incident. In Term 2 this was continued with the Year 8 students to ensure they had the information to make safe decisions if they were introduced to any type of drug. The PE & Health teacher has continued the theme with the Year 9 students in Term 4, and built a solid foundation for students to start making good informed decisions.ImpactThe impact to the school has been significant in that they have had to deal with only one incident of drug misuse this year, and that was for Year 11 students not the target area.Next stepsThe school will continue to work with the School Community Officer in delivering drug education to Year 8 students on a yearly basis.ObstaclesNone, as all parties involved were on the same page and worked well together to seek improvements within the school.ImprovementsA suggested improvement would be to explore how to enable more student-led action to keep their community safe from drug abuse, for example making a video to go on the school website, doing a presentation for the rest of the school, or setting up a student group along the lines of Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD).ConclusionThrough this intervention, the school has partnered with Police and other community businesses, and made a measureable impact on the issue.
