Identification and prioritisationThe issue of bullying was discussed at a liaison meeting between the school and Police. The deputy principal said staff were concerned that some students reported being bullied at school. The school believed that combining  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) and an anti-bullying campaign would be relevant, as it would educate and empower students on how to keep safe.Short-term goalStudents will have increased confidence to come forward and make disclosures about abuse and bullying, measured by reports to teachers.Long-term goalStudents will be empowered to make sensible and educated decisions about their safety, measured by fewer reports of incidents.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school reviewed its child protection policies and ensured, through a staff meeting, that all teachers were familiar with the procedure for handling disclosures. The school promoted zero tolerance for bullying. A staff meeting was held to build staff capability in implementing KOS and to clarify which parts would be taught by the teachers and which by the SCO. Teaching resources for KOS were loaned to the school, and others were accessed from the  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Police school portal. The SCO spoke to any students who were identified as initiators of bullying in the school, and emphasised that they needed to change their behavior. Community connections The school worked in partnership with Police to implement KOS. Three Bluelight discos occurred during the year, which also stressing the importance of zero bullying. The school invited an outside agency to deliver an anti-bullying message to the whole school. A meeting to inform parents about KOS was run. The school social worker and the SCO attended this meeting. Parents were included in KOS through a number of home activities that students took home to share with their families. These activities encouraged families to discuss matters relating to child protection. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior students received lessons from Police resources for  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/kos-0-3http:/www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-3" KOS years 13 and middle school students completed  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/kos-4-6" KOS years 46. Anti-bullying resources were given to the students to take home and keep.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, several students made disclosures of abuse, and bullying incidents were brought to the teachers attention.Next stepsThe next step is to continue to develop the schools relationship with its community in order to reinforce the messages of reporting abuse, promoting successful relationships and protecting children. KOS will be part of the school curriculum on a biannual basis.ObstaclesIt was challenging to engage parents with the intervention. A few parents took part in the school meeting or participated in the home activities. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by a greater emphasis on promoting parental engagement. Students could show what they have learnt through activities such as making videos, giving speeches or writing letters. ConclusionThe school is proud that it promotes a safe environment in which students feel safe and can learn how to keep themselves safe, and where bullying is not condoned and is reported immediately.
