There were three fatalities during those times. The school wanted students to take self-directed activity to enhance NAG-5.Short-term goalTo have zero injuries of pedestrians or drivers outside Te Wharau School, before and after school on the first week of term. Long-term goalTo create student awareness about responsibility for their own and the communitys safety at the school gate, before and after school, and as an ongoing life skill.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) School policies were reviewed to ensure requirements were up to date. The School Traffic Safety Team (STST) staff assisted school patrollers to choose students and families who had shown safety skills or improved their unsafe behaviour at the school crossing, to be awarded Blue Light Gotcha rewards. Not only did the recipients receive a free ice-cream, they went into a draw to win prizes suitable for families, donated by the community, e.g. pool and cinema passes, vouchers, or overnight stays at Top 10 holiday parks. All school were made aware of the Gotcha campaign via school assembly, posters and media. Three students were selected to be the Champions of the Champion School. The school was involved in future planning of walk-ways and cycle-paths throughout the neighbourhood. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Operation Crest was instigated by Road Policing to address driving behaviour outside schools at the beginning of term. All Police participating in Operation Crest were provided with these Gotcha vouchers to hand out. The School Community Officers used ice-cream vouchers to reward safe road behaviour by drivers, passengers or pedestrians. Road Policing, local cinema, the Top 10 motor camp, Olympic Pools, PaknSave, The Warehouse, bike shop, printer, Herald and radio station were all approached and very keen to be involved. The school was keen to be a champion school for Operation Crest. Champion students visited sponsors to thank them, and to invite them to the presentation event. The school held an event to present prizes to the winners. Police management, sponsors, winning parents and students from other schools attended Te Wharau for the presentation. The master of ceremonies was a popular local DJ. Afternoon tea was provided by Blue Light. All sponsors were sent thank you letters and a certificate acknowledging their participation. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Junior classes ran a  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Safe Walking programme. All classes displayed Gotcha posters. The skills of the current STST team and their families were developed to think about how their actions contributed to the community safety. Students spoke to the paper and radio about their initiative, and what they had seen and heard from their mates and families during and afterwards. ImpactRoad Policing reported a reduction in incidents, and reduced numbers of infringements given. The first operation resulted in 270 infringements, but for the second operation only 90 infringements were issued. Students were more aware of the role of the STST team, and their added portfolio. Students were encouraging their families to be caught doing the right thing. The public enjoyed the fact that they received rewards, not infringements. When the champion student appeared in the paper, an aunt wanted to know what it was all about, providing a good opportunity for the student to articulate a preventative action that benefits the whole community. The school was happy to be recognised working in collaboration with Police and community to help solve a nationally recognised issue. The school reported a noticeable improvement of regular troublesome students. The sponsors were happy to be involved and keen to extend this to a regular start-of-term exercise ad infinitum. Operation Crest was happy to incorporate Gotcha, and saw it as a win, win. A local printer donated a fabulous professional poster that was colourful and eye-catching with local flair.Next stepsTo run the initiative every beginning of term, using a different champion school each term. ObstaclesNil.ImprovementsVouchers could be awarded not only to the champion school, but to all schools, so as to heighten awareness of road safety to the whole community. The Blue Light coordinator will take over co-ordination. Gotcha will be extended up to East Coast schools and down to Wairoa, with each area sourcing local sponsors if they choose. The printer suggested a means of extending the initiative to a corporate level to raise funds for Blue Light.ConclusionThis was a low cost initiative ($100) and a thoroughly enjoyable exercise for all. It was very effective in lowering the potential for injury or infringements, heightening awareness of self-driven safety, and responsibility in and to the community.
