These dangers have prevented many students from commuting to school on their own - they didn't feel confident to do so and some parents considered the risk factor too great. Identification and prioritisationThe Principal prioritised the problem as high. Following NAG 5 the school decided to make the local environment a safer place for commuting students. However, the local authority did not accept these safety considerations. Short-term goalAn informed professional will be engaged to examine the area surrounding the school that students need to negotiate to get to and from school and the surrounding village. Long-term goalAll road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic, will be safe. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A senior roading engineer from the New Zealand Transport Agency was consulted and confirmed that road safety issues do exist close to the school. The engineer has proposed solutions to make the area safer. Community connections The parents of the students have expressed their concerns to the school. The school has been working with Police, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the local council to resolve the issue. Curriculum teaching and learning A 2-week cycle safety programme was conducted within the school. ImpactThe short-term goal has been achieved, the problems have been identified and some engineering and environmental solutions have been put forward. Next stepsThe school will continue to engage with the NZTA engineer and reopen discussions with the local authority regarding the engineers recommendations, which included engineering changes at intersections, the relocation of speed signs, and cutting back vegetation to increase visibility. ObstaclesThe main obstacle is lack of agreement with the local authority on the nature of the problem and the resulting inability to reach a solution.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by making a combined presentation to the local authority from the various interested parties to clarify the problem and suggest solutions.ConclusionThis intervention is still in negotiation.
