This encouraged students to walk on the road (especially in winter and in wet weather) or simply not use that crossing. The second crossing point had no defined path leading to or away from the crossing. This forced students to walk over grass or simply not use the crossing. The third crossing point was in the middle of the car park, so that students had to walk among vehicles. Vehicles also parked on the opposite side, restricting students line of sight. Identification and prioritisationPolice identified the issues while conducting training for the school traffic safety team. The principal shared similar concerns and raised them with the board of trustees. Short-term goalBetter road markings and footpaths will be provided to enable students and the community to use the designated crossing points. Long-term goalNo students will walk on the road. All parents and students who cross the road will use the upgraded crossing points.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school updated its policies and protocols relating to traffic management inside and outside the school. Protocols were established with the community on the safest way to pick up students. This was achieved through information and consultation shared at board of trustee meetings and through school newsletters. Traffic Wardens were trained to operate the upgraded crossing points. All staff were taught new safety procedures and protocols, and were encouraged to be role models for traffic safety. The local roading authority laid new footpaths and painted new road markings to stop parking where the traffic wardens operate and improve visibility. Community connections Important community relationships were formed and strengthened with the district council. Parents were informed of the new safety protocols through the school newsletter and board of trustee meetings. Curriculum teaching and learning Students were selected and trained as traffic wardens to operate the upgraded crossings. Students encouraged family and friends to use the crossing points at all times. ImpactAs a result of this intervention the school community now has a practical, functional set of footpaths around the school. Fewer students walk on the road. Next stepsThe next step is ongoing education for the community and students about the safest way to cross the road, reminding them to use the footpaths and informing them where the traffic wardens operate.ObstaclesThe biggest obstacle was the several months wait for the work to be completed, as the local road authority had to prioritise its projects in all of Central Hawkes Bay.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving the students in the decision making instead leaving it all to the adults.ConclusionThe school is proud of the improved safety around the school, and that students and the community are no longer forced to walk through long wet grass to reach the school.
