Identification and prioritisationThe principal noticed an increase in antisocial behaviour at the school during lunch times. The issue was discussed by senior management, Police and a local NGO that mentors youth. Short-term goalMeaningful and enjoyable activities will be established for the students during lunch time. Long-term goalStudents will manage themselves during lunch times, resulting in fewer incidents of antisocial behaviour.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school updated its policies and protocols for teachers on duty during lunch times and identified hotspots where incidents of antisocial behaviour were more frequent. Youth Weeks were rostered into the school calendar, including the national youth week. Activities during these weeks included: a Pink Shirt Day to promote anti-bullying messages students created their own pink shirt designs and ran a pink food challenge a Celebrate Diversity Day this involved an obscure talent showcase featuring YouTube uploads and live acts a Stand Together Day of 5-a-side team sports a Soup Day, which was a surprising hit the community (grandmothers) provided over a dozen crock pots of their special homemade recipes other fun activities, including a world record attempt for the number of students who could fit into a Police patrol car, a water slide on the back field, and several barbeques. Community connections Important community relationships were formed and strengthened with the NGO, youth workers, the school community, and Police Youth Aid and SCO officers. The Soup Day grandmothers really enjoyed interacting with the students. Curriculum teaching and learning Students were encouraged to speak up against bullying and to be proud of diversity. Students designed and put their own messages on their pink shirts. Students created and performed their own obscure talent show to a packed lunchtime hall.ImpactAs a result of this intervention students were more engaged and occupied during lunch times. Next stepsThe next step is for students to take ownership of youth weeks during the year so that they stay engaged and refrain from antisocial behaviour. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was to choose activities that were fun and relevant for the students. Some flopped and others were a surprising success.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving students more in the planning stages, so that they can develop a sense of ownership of the youth weeks.ConclusionThe school is proud of the improvement in the behaviour around the school of all year groups, and the way in which students engaged with and supported the youth weeks.
