Short-term goalDevelop awareness of the students, so they are able to identify forms of abuse, and understand the process for reporting abuse. This goal is to be measured by assessment of KOS.Long-term goalThe students are safe from abuse in school and in the community. This goal is to be measured by reports of abuse to the school or Police.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Staff researched the KOS resources, then asked questions from the research. Procedures for disclosure were understood and followed by staff. The school policy now states that KOS runs bi-annually. Allowed students to action skills and strategies taught from the programme. Increase student knowledge and skills regarding safety in school and in the community. Whenever an issue is happens in Aotearoa or worldwide regarding abuse, teachers of Year 5s and older talk openly to students about it. Its all about awareness. ImpactThe short-term goals were achieved, as evidenced by the following: Students communicated to the teachers the different situations within the community when they witnessed abuse. Students were able to identify to staff when abuse was happening, and were able to name what types of abuse it was. Staff were made aware of and understood the process for reporting any forms of abuse. Students could better understand and empathise with abuse as they listened to audio situations and watched videos. As a result, students felt safer in this school and in the community because of the knowledge and skills they learned.Next stepsThe long-term goal will be measured through the school monitoring reports, behaviour and attitudes of students towards possible abuse. The school will deliver KOS again in 2018.ObstaclesStudents found it difficult to talk about their private parts. This can be addressed next time during the training of staff.ImprovementsA mention for updated videos to the 21st century was made. The school would look at other dramatic improvisations to assist in the learning.ConclusionStaff are happy with the learning outcomes of KOS, as students feel safer at school. Teachers found KOS easy to run, and so may not need so much Police assistance next time they do it, as most have done KOS a few times now.
