ACC have presented the following national data: 15-24 year olds are the group most at risk from violence by current and ex-partners. 1 in 5 female and 1 in 10 male secondary school students report unwanted sexual contact or being made to do unwanted sexual things. 37% describe it as severe and 57% tell no-one. Working with young people is one of the most effective ways of preventing sexual and dating violence.Identification and prioritisationIdentified and prioritised by: a NGO provider from Northland, SOS Kaipara (Support of Sexually abuse Kaipara) who contract to ACC to facilitate the Mates and Dates relationship education programme in Northland schools. the school, who wanted to not only increase knowledge and awareness of sexual and dating violence, but to change attitudes and behaviours of their students. Short-term goalAn increase in students disclosing information of having been or knowing someone involved in a bad relationship.Long-term goalsIdentification of students who are in need of support, reducing the effects of abuse. Students creating healthier relationships over a period of time, by increasing respect, negotiation and consent towards each other. Students identifying inappropriate behaviour, and safely intervening in situations that could lead to harm.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) School identified the need for an abuse prevention programme that suited their timetabling, and opted for Mates and Dates. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) SOS Kaipara set up the teacher and parent meetings. ACC sent the SCO on a three-day Mates and Dates facilitators course. Curriculum teaching and learning Lessons were spread over five one-hour lessons, which fitted in well with the school timetable. Spreading the sessions over a five-week rotation meant that the students were wanting to know more about consent and respecting others.ImpactBecause this programme is new to Northland schools, the evaluations haves not yet been measured to assess how it has impacted within the school. Next stepsTo work closely with the SOS Kaipara coordinator and other facilitators to review the survey from the school, teachers and students, and to discuss and implement better ways of facilitating if need be. This will also give an overview about information disclosed from students. ObstaclesAlthough a presentation was made to teachers and parents, some still presumed that it was based around lessons for sex. Some questions were asked about Police implementing Mates and Dates, but in the end there was a positive response. ImprovementsTo measure the effectiveness of similar interventions in the future, local data could be gathered beforehand (for example, the number of students entered into the School Management System for relationship issues or who seek support about relationships). The same data source could then be measured again afterwards to assess impact. A wellbeing survey could also provide useful data. Although this is the first time Mates and Dates has been implemented in the school, improvements can only get better to get the message to the students, the teachers and parents about preventing mating and dating violence, and creating those healthy relationships needed for all high school students.ConclusionAs a result of Mates and Dates, the school has seen how it gave students the opportunity to talk about healthy and unhealthy relationship issues, and how to have a good outcome.
