Paki School Community Officer  SummarySolving the problem of the effect of cannabis on student achievement.IssueThe school wished to address ongoing concerns about the increasing number of students affected by the use of cannabis while at school. These effects included health risks and lower student achievement. Identification and prioritisationThe issue was highlighted in 2013 through a number of incidents including: an increase in the number of students who were signed up to the Rubicon alcohol and drug support programme drug utensils found on the school tennis courts, the netball court and the outer fields incidents of students smoking cannabis in unused classrooms during intervals.Short-term goalTo develop a culture of positive health and well-being for all students. To improve students decision making through increased awareness, by means of education and external agency support. Long-term goalTo sustain a culture of positive health and well-being for all students. To maintain the strong relationships developed with external agencies.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The principal informed the board of trustees of his concerns that students in his school were affected by drug use. He also called a meeting with the support agencies working in his school to address these concerns. The schools drug policies and stance were readdressed. A scan of the school environment using CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles highlighted a number of hazards, including public walkways through the school where students could access drugs or to go off-site to consume cannabis. Truant students from a nearby school often met on these walkways. As a result of the scan: the number of school staff on duty during intervals was increased . areas out of bounds to the students were more defined clearly the boundaries were explained at assemblies and through newsletters to families the consequences for students found in these areas were explained and strictly adhered to communication concerning truant students was established with the adjacent school bell times at the two schools were adjusted to minimise interaction between the two sets of students. Community connections Multiple agencies met with the school to consider ways of improving information sharing and to form an action team. These included the SCO, Rubicon, Police Youth Aid, the Youth Alternative Action Coordinator, CYFS, public health nurses, the school counselling services and the Kauri Coast Area committee of DARE. Parents were informed about the schools revised drug policy, its procedures when students are caught with drugs in school, and the education to empower students to make better decisions when confronted with illicit drugs. A meeting was arranged at which parents could raise any concerns. A parents meeting was held to describe how the intervention would be implemented. Presentations were made by Police, Rubicon, school staff and public health nurses. A netball game was held between Police and the school to share a positive interaction with Police. Rugby League Northland promoted sport as a positive alternative to drugs. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received Police-supported lessons from  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/healthy-body-healthy-mind/choice-year-0" Choice (for years 78) and lessons from  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-5" Keeping Ourselves Safe (for years 78). The main emphasis was on building self-esteem and raising awareness of illicit drugs and their effects on the body, the consequences of drug use, and avoidance techniques if confronted to participate in drug use.ImpactMonitoring of the grounds improved and fewer drug utensils were found. The number of students signed up to Rubicon in 2014 was significantly less than in 2013. The 2014 students included some who voluntarily signed on again as a preventative measure as a result of peer and family pressure to re-engage in drug use.Next stepsThe next steps are to maintain ongoing support from the external agencies through regular updates from the established action group.ObstaclesInitially some parents attitudes were a barrier, because external agencies were targeting them to search their houses and assess their parenting ability. Another obstacle was getting all the external agencies together at the same time for meetings. Improvements The intervention could be improved by involving the students in identifying the problems in the school environment. This would give them a sense of ownership in their school and their own safety. Their solutions might enhance community engagement by involving their families. ConclusionThe school is proud of the cooperation exhibited by the students and their parents in this intervention to keep their children safe.
